Salsa can be danced in a closed dance position or hand-in-hand, with the man's palms facing upwards, and the lady taking his hands with her palms down, allowing more freedom of movement. The man holds the lady's right hand in his left, and places his right hand on or around her left shoulder blade. The lady rests her left hand on his right should, with her arm over his. They should maintain eye contact in order to retain that seductive characteristic of the dance.

There are two basic steps in salsa dancing: the front step and the back step. Repeating these steps to make eight steps is a basic salsa dance move. In salsa dancing the man leads, and the lady follows. The man's part goes as follows: tap your foot and hold the beat, take a small step forward with your left foot, rock back slightly onto your right foot, step back one small step again with your left foot, hold the beat, step one small step back with the right foot, rock forward slightly with your left foot, and step one small step forward with your right foot.

The woman's part goes as follows: tap your foot and hold the beat, step one small step back with your right foot, rock gently forward onto your left foot, step one small step forward with your right foot, hold the beat, step one small step forward with your left foot, rock back gently onto your right foot, and step one small step back with your left foot.
