Many of the beginning steps in tango counts as slow, slow, quick, quick, slow. A slow count is held for two beats and a quick is one beat. The steps should be staccato, which means that you should strike the floor quickly with your foot, and not shuffle or drag your feet. This is true for all counts except for the final slow count of the pattern, where you slowly drag in your free foot.

Tango is usually started in closed dance position. By closed dance position, we mean that it is danced in a close hold with body contact from the ribcage to the hips. The lady's right hand is placed in the man's left, and held at about eye level. Also, the hands are held just outside of the bent elbows. The man's right hand, on the other hand, is placed under the lady's arm and on the middle of the lady's lower back. The lady wraps her left elbow around the man's right elbow, with her left thumb under the man's right tricep muscle. The lady should dance slightly to the man's right, looking over her left wrist.

The man's part goes as follows: right foot back, left foot to the side, right foot forward, left foot forward, right foot together with the left, left foot forward, right foot pivot to the left, and right foot together with the left. The lady's part goes as follows: left foot forward, right foot to the side, left foot back, right foot back, cross with the left, right foot back, left foot pivot to the left, and left foot together with the right.
