Today I want to reveal a secret to you that I consider it to be a silver bullet'which means it is the one secret I would use if I were stuck on an island and had only one bit of how to build bigger calves-bodybuilding knowledge to take along with me! And here is the 'bigger calves' secret
'Muscles adapt according to how they are used'''adaptation is a measure of function '
Adaptation and function are interrelated, if function and use of a muscle goes up, adaptation follows suit'ok this bigger calves secret might be confusing so I will explain
Why is this so important to developing bigger calves..?
Well if you understand what it means you will save yourself years if not decades at the gym trying to build bigger calves and you can forget about trial and error workouts , supersets ,descending sets, forced reps and all that high intensity stuff that really cant deliver the bigger calves results this simple muscle building rule can deliver.
Muscles are used by the body to protect its internal organs, for movement and to survive! That is it! Muscles are not there to make you look good ( even though that is what we aim for in bodybuilding)'they are there in a large degree to how much they are used(function)'this applies to developing big calves. Because the calf muscles are even more resistant to change and unless you do something different you are not likely to develop bigger calves muscles
Let's see how we can use this secret to pile on muscle mass on your calves at an alarming rate'
Take the calves for example'.you train them day in day out, month after month, year after year, you try everything to get them to grow but in the end you get nothing! Why?
The answer is simple! There is no function and so there is no adaptation. Calves carry you all day long and at any given movement they carry twice your bodyweight and much more in force and pressure, plus every day you are performing thousands of partial repetitions'.
Knowing the above mentioned function of the calves and the corresponding stress placed on the calves through this basic daily function - do you think a set of calf raises with 200-400lbs is going to give you bigger calves? The answer is 'Not likely'
Why? The function you are performing is nothing new when compared to its daily function'so there is no adaptation and no growth!
So get the calves bigger, you need to break through their 'function threshold' this does not mean heavy weights or high reps or singles on the donkey calf raise. It means the following
Every time you walk you are performing 100's of partial reps with double your bodyweight. To get a higher threshold you need an exaggerated range of motion
- since each foot technically carries your entire bodyweight anytime you walk you need more overload to target the muscle
To apply this you have to make a directed effort to treat every rep as a set. What do I mean by this? For bigger calves each rep has to be done with perfect form and exaggerated motion. This means you have to stretch so far down that your heels nearly touch the floor, it also means that you raise yourself on the top of your toes, so high just like a ballet dancer'and when you are up there you squeeze the calves for all its worth, such a rep would take you 6-7 seconds to compete as compared to an ordinary repetition that would take you 3-4 seconds.
This brings me to the discussion of THE MAGIC REP? What is the magic number of reps you should use when trying to beef your calves'ready for this?
That is right? 3. Is the magic number for developing bigger calves muscles? BUT I HEAR YOU SAYING 'wait a minute'the experts say 8-12 for strength , 1-7 for power and 15-30 for endurance'how is this possible'?
Well there are not wrong...but they are wrong when they assume that everyone is using perfect exaggerated form, which is not the case when it comes to training your calves'
3 reps are key to getting bigger calves-'let me explain why and then show you how to use it'
THE MAGIC OF 3
OK THE MAGIC BEHIND THE 3 rep set is that each rep is treated as the last. Which means I want you to treat each rep as the last'meaning you better exaggerate your motion, all the way done and all the way up'it has to be exaggerated if not animated!
Ok the reason for the number this magic number '3' is that anything more than that and you tend to go lazy with the range of motion'you simply go through the motions.
But with 3 reps you can put everything into the rep...After all it is only 3 reps '
